Can or can’t?

Anyone who really knows me will tell you that I can’t do any form of DIY. Never ask me to help with anything like that as I will not be able to do it and I will only make things worse.

When we got our first house Joanne was heading out for the day and said to me to file down the skirting boards in the hall – so I did it my way!!! Got the power file out and buffed the skirtings down to the wood, took me a few hours to do a few inches.

Like the time we wanted to take a wall away in our shower room – I could do that easily!!! After a while of smashing away at this wall I stood on a nail which went right through my slippers (yep, your thinking that slippers is not the correct form of footwear to be wearing carrying out such a task) – this was followed shortly afterwards with a call to a good friend of mine asking him how you stopped water pouring out of the cistern.

I am a disaster with diy and I’m not afraid to admit it. When Joanne and I got engaged my dad starting collecting DIY magazines for me – you know the ones that came in binders and there was about 500 of them to buy on a weekly/monthly basis. Dear love him, I don’t know how much they cost him but they lay in my roof space for years before being donated to a local charity shop.

He also started to gather me up a collection of tools and electrical equipment which lay in my garage (and probably are still there), although I did get using above mentioned power file for a short period of time.

When it comes to my eating habits there is an unbelievably long list of things that I can’t eat – now not because I have some mysterious illness or allergy it’s purely that I don’t like them. Again those that know me well will be shouting ‘have you ever tried them’ – no, I haven’t and no I never will.

I can’t (or don’t) eat salads, fruit, vegetables, pizzas, Indians, Chinese, Italian, anything spicy, kebabs, omelettes, fish, etc etc etc – my list could go on for miles of what I can’t eat.

I’m a nightmare when it comes to my eating habits and I have to apologise to anyone who has ever been out for dinner with me or invited me round for dinner – I’m sorry for the hassle I cause.

Years ago we were invited to a wedding, reception was in a bank managers house. There was only a handful of people at it. The spread that had been put on was amazing but sadly and embarrassingly for me there wasn’t one thing I could eat – very hard to hide away in such a small location. After the host rummaged round the fridge I sat down to eat with everyone and tucked in to my ham soda!!!! Time for dessert, oops – yet again after a serious look around fridge and freezer I again sat down with the rest of the guests and really enjoyed my choc ice.

It does annoy me that I can’t be better with my hands, it does annoy me that I can’t be more adventurous when it comes to going out for dinner. There are loads and loads of things that I can’t do but I have to remember and focus on the things I can do.

I can be a good husband, I can be a good dad, I can be a good friend, I can help people, I can listen, I can give, I can support, I can encourage, I can advise, I can do lots and lots of things that will make a difference in this world of ours.

I want to encourage you to not think or dwell on what you can’t but look at what you can and
act on it – it will make a difference.

May God bless, strengthen and encourage you.
